As a Loadmaster/Loading Supervisor, my main role is to coordinate and lead ramp teams in the safe and timely turnaround of DHL cargo aircraft. As part of this time imperative, safety centred role it is my responsibility to lead on-stand briefings, conduct aircraft walkarounds, ensure that the stand is correctly prepared for aircraft arrival, pursue delayed cargo to the aircraft, delegate tasks to members of my team and be accountable for the overall safe offloading and loading of our aircraft. To ensure safety and operational standards are maintained, it is also part of my role to complete occurrence reports and file flight files with all relevant documentation included.

As well as the positioning of GSE (Ground Service Equipment) and the safe and timely load/offload of cargo aircraft, my responsibilities also extend to load verification. This includes the recording of cargo weight, destination and its position loaded onto the aircraft which would be cross-checked with the final loading instruction report (trim). I also must sign to confirm that all locks and stops are secure, that dangerous goods tags have been checked and that all cargo is securely restrained for transport by air.

Whilst at Gatwick I had the opportunity to shadow the role of TCO (Aircraft Dispatching), a safety centred role which focuses on the secure, on-time turnaround and departure of aircraft. • I had first- hand experience in securing the ramp for the arrival of EasyJet aircraft, conducting FOD searches and examining essential ramp equipment.• Accurately recording the location of baggage on aircraft, ensuring that the weight and balance parameters are not exceeded.• Communicating effectively with pilots and ground crew allowing essential, safety-critical tasks to be completed without error and within strict time constraints. • Safely managing the boarding and deboarding of passengers.
