Worked under a PhD student (Bridget Lee) in Dr. Timothy Lyons' biogeochemistry lab at the University of California, Riverside. Learned procedures for sequential iron extraction, total iron extraction, and some chromium reduction. Operated ELTRA carbon/sulfur determinator and furnace. Prepared rocks for testing by cutting core samples with a tile saw, breaking them up with a hammer, powdering them in a ball mill, labeling all the sample vials. Ran extractions following standard operating procedures, safely dealing with boiling acid and fumes. Prepared MS Excel spreadsheets with sample numbers, weights at each step, and final ICP-MS data for each sample set tested. Daily lab chores included diluting acid for wash bottles, cleaning/roasting boats for use with the ELTRA, cleaning and restocking pipette tips. Show less

Earned and maintained Red Cross certifications in lifeguarding, CPR, first aid, AED operation, and as a water safety instructor. Started and marketed my own business teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding private pool parties. Rented and taught lessons out of my neighbor's backyard pool. Every summer, I taught 15-20 people ranging in age from 4 to over 50 years old how to swim. Had many repeat clients and word-of-mouth referrals.
