I worked one-on-one with high school clarinet students to improve their skill at a rapid pace. Apart from individual lesson plans, the student's and I planned specific goals for them to work towards and achieve before the school year was complete. For example, one of my students wanted to audition and gain a seat in the Louisiana All-State Band and perform at the Louisiana Music Educators Association. We worked on fundamental skills and the provided music until they were well prepared. They were successful in making the ensemble after a few months of work. Each of the students had different interests and enjoyed having and individualized plan from their colleagues. Show less

    • Graduate Assistant
      • Aug 2020 - May 2022

My assistantship was spent across several types of work. The majority of my time was spent across four categories that included teaching, administrative assistance, organization projects for faculty, and research. One major role throughout my Master's degree was leading and instructing small ensembles and private lessons in clarinet. This included evaluating student progress, leading courses independently from professors, checking assignments, and collaborating with professors on student grades. The second part of my assistantship was administrative and research focused. I completed work for department members with research, academic, and administrative needs. This included organizing classroom instruction and materials, working as a liaison between department members and students, as well as research completed for instruction. Between classroom instruction and research, I spent time organizing a large excel document that logged Northwestern State's new clarinet music library. I went through each piece of music (over 1,600 works) making notes of titles, instrumentation, publication, editors, and more, crossed referenced each pieces across multiple categories in just a few months. The last portion of my degree was focused on research, specifically, A Historical Perspective on Compositions by Women. My performance document was completed in about 7 months with high regards from several professors. The document highlights a women's role in music from the eighteenth century to the twenty-first and the challenges they faced well into current times. My experience at Northwestern State University in the Graduate School has provided me with endless opportunities for growth and learning experiences. Show less

    • Unit Counselor and Instructor
      • Jun 2021 - Aug 2021

Fine Arts Camp was four sessions of a 12-day sleep away camp for campers working to improve their skills. My initial job was a Camp Counselor where I was housed with 6 to 8 campers. My responsibilities included leading children to destinations safely and in a timely manner, supervising campers throughout the entire day, providing emotional support and guidance, and planning activities for the cabin mates to do together. Halfway through the summer I was assigned a new position as a Unit Counselor. This job allowed me to facilitate campers in large quantities (up to 90), participate in meetings to coordinate with staff members on campers' progress and needs throughout the 12 days, as well as work behind the scenes in administrative duties. This position also allowed me to work closely with my colleagues by listening to their needs, complaints, instruction, and feedback when taking care of their students. Outside of my positions that ensured campers safety and wellbeing, I taught clarinet to students in grades 4-8 over 10 days in each session. This allowed me to coordinate plans with other teachers around the camp, including band directors, and devise my own lesson plans for student improvement. Show less

My student teaching experience involved flexibility and adaptability as it took place in the beginning of the pandemic. Although my experience was abnormal, I gained many skills and learned a tremendous amount about myself and my capabilities. My time was spent developing lesson plans for large groups and individual students, providing educational, behavioral, and emotional support to students, monitoring classrooms, working one-on-one with professionals in the education field on lessons and self-improvement strategies, and shifting between methods of teaching to keep students actively engaged.
