  My thesis re-evaluates the relationship between original text and translation through an approach that assumes the equality of source and target texts. This is based on the translation strategy expressed in the work of the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges and theoretical approaches by Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault, as well as exponents of Possible World Theory. Rather than considering what may be lost in translation, this thesis focuses on why we insist on maintaining a border between the textual phenomena ‘translation’ and ‘original’ and argues for a mutually enriching dialogue between a text and its translation. Case studies are taken from Modernism and include Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares collaboratively translating pseudotranslations; Borges's self-translation; translations of Virginia Woolf's Orlando and A Room of One's Own for the Argentine publishing house Sur; collaborative translations of short stories and fragments by Franz Kafka.

  Innovative Routes to Learning (IRL) is part of the widening access programme Focus West, organized by further and higher education institutions in the West of Scotland, encouraging pupils from lower performing schools to embark on FE and HE programmes. As a mentor, my duties included leading groups of secondary 5, 6 and 7 pupils (aged 14-17) in skills such as CV building, confidence skills, learning types, group and individual activities, but also undertaking programmes with primary school pupils to ease them into secondary school. As convener of the Modern Languages strand of the S@S Accelerate summer school, I oversaw a group of mentors and secondary school pupils in activities to encourage interest in and knowledge of studying modern languages at FE and HE institutions. My duties included liaising with the team, external participants, time-keeping, pastoral duties, briefings and debriefings.

My duties including researching content (from his own letters and collection, and the holdings at the National Library of Scotland), designing the panels, including text and images, liaising with printers and library stuff, and organizing the launch event with Reid himself.
