I work as part of the Industrial Disease department as a paralegal working within the BT hearing loss claims team. I peruse client’s medical records and draft letters of instruction to ENT consultants. I also take initial instructions from new potential clients to see if they have any prospects of making a claim. I answer any queries any clients have regarding their hearing loss claims throughout the day and I use a case management system called visual files and SOS. When the medico-legal reports are received from the ENT consultants I then peruse them and carry out calculations to work out if the client’s hearing loss is noise induced. I then work closely with the solicitors and draft a schedule of loss which is then passed on to BT’s insurers. The matter is then passed on to the solicitors. I have a target of 4 chargeable hours per day which I am meeting every day.

I worked as part of the Welfare benefits department as a fee earner/paralegal where I took initial instructions and then provided advice to clients over the phone regarding their welfare benefit issues. I also created attendance notes and help my clients from their initial call from the community legal advice help lines through to the appeal process and if needed the tribunal process. I have experience using ‘casetrack’ which is a case management system. This helps with keeping track of my caseload of clients. I had a personal caseload of 150 clients and I had a target of 6 chargeable hours per day which I met without any problems every day. I also learnt how to analyse a Statement of Reasons from a Tribunal hearing which included researching relevant legislation and case law and looking to see if the Tribunal have made adequate findings of fact. In limited cases I then assisted my client’s with their Upper Tribunal appeals.
