I'd like to give my thanks to Rebecca for a recent visit to the University of Sheffield to speak to PhD students and post-doctoral researchers who are developing their skills and attributes towards a career beyond academia: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ris/ecr/mentoring/vista Rebecca's appreciation of the life and role of a researcher within the academic culture, combined with a thorough understanding of her own stimulating and challenging industry, combined to make an informative, personal and inspiring career seminar that really appealed to the audience. Rebecca's role was to communicate both her day-to-day job role, the best and the worst bits, and also the wider context of the industrial/SME contrast, the culture and the impact of the work, and the key drivers for research. She did all of this with an obvious enthusiasm for her own role that the audience found inspiring and attractive as a career path. Her relaxed, honest, conversational style really brought her role to life. Rebecca's insight into the challenges that academic researchers face enabled her to put across information that was meaningful and achievable and that enabled the seminar audience to really understand her role, and the skills required. She pitched her presentation skillfully, allowing practical suggestions to come through and giving real value to staff and students of the university. Overall this was a great success, and I have already invited her back to deliver a similar session next year.
