An Australian Government initiative, co-funded by the New Zealand Government, the Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access (PHAMA) Program provides practical and targeted assistance to help Pacific island countries manage regulatory aspects associated with exporting primary and value added products. This encompasses gaining access for products into new markets, and helping to manage issues associated with maintaining and improving existing trade. Australia and New Zealand are markets of major interest, along with export markets beyond the Pacific. The core countries assisted through PHAMA include Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. PHAMA also provides assistance to other Pacific island countries through the Secretariat of the Pacific Community’s (SPC’ s) Land Resources Division. With a passion for rural livelihoods and development, my current role as the National Coordinator for the PHAMA program in Vanuatu means I am at the forefront connecting industry stakeholders – rural small holder farmers, commercial farmers, exporters, and government representatives – to discuss industry priorities and market access issues.

The model of group lending and mobile-banking results in lower costs and higher profits which are returned to clients through interest paid to their savings accounts. VANWODS clients are mostly women, and empowering them financially to access micro finance services has a ripple effect that contributes greatly in improving the livelihoods of their homes, communities and villages.
