Work carried out: - Identifying and sequencing spore coat proteins in carotenoid producing Bacillus indicus and Bacillus firmus, HU36 and GB1 respectively (Maldi Mass Spectrometry) - Search for the orthologues of B. subtilis spore coat proteins and sigma factors in pathogenic bacteria Clostridium difficile (amino acid and nucleotide sequence homology blasts, search for conserved domains) - Evaluating the bioavailability of carotenoids in the bloodstream (LC-Mass Spectrometry) of female wistar rats following ingestion of g.i. stable carotenoid producing Bacillus indicus and Bacillus firmus, HU36 and GB1, respectively. Implications for future application as probiotics. - Evaluating the survival of Bacillus subtilis spores in biscuits as part of a project aimed at designing novel ways of applying probiotics to biscuits.
