As associate publisher for events, I lead a team of full-time employees and contractors to plan three trade shows and five multi-day conferences spread over the half-dozen industries our magazines focus on. During covid, much of this work turned to online conferences, and I have experience using a variety of platforms. My work on special projects ranges from overseeing contests our company puts on to assisting our editorial and advertising sales staff on any variety of projects — from custom box fulfillment for a large client to editorial projects that need extra staff support or organizational oversight. When a challenge arises in any part of our company, I'm the guy who's sent in to work to find a solution.

Editor-in-Chief of Pets+ Magazine

Founding editor of a 10x/year business-to-business magazine serving 30,000 independet pet retailers and service providers throughout the U.S. While the magazine has “pets” in the title, it, like all SmartWork Media’s titles, provides actionable business-building advice, from budgeting to staffing, to managing, marketing and public relations. Manage an editorial and production staff as well as more than a dozen freelance writers and columnists whose work appears in the magazine’s pages as well as online, in podcasts and webinars. Oversee a Facebook community with more than 1,000 members. Planned and executed the 2019 Pets+ Wellness Summit, a two-day trade show and educational seminar in Chicago focusing on pet wellness issues and products. Attend trade events throughout the year as the public face of the magazine.

Working with the top officials at a graduate university founded under a SEATO charter with students, staff and faculty from 90 countries, I helped craft a new charter, helped introduce an American style of fund-raising and worked in media relations, garnering press coverage from more than half a dozen countries. My experience there led me to have interactions with two former Thai prime ministers, the Thai Royal Household and ambassadors to Thailand from more than a dozen countries. Filed freelance stories for Scripps Howard News Service from Phuket, Thailand, in the days following the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. In the middle of a yearlong sabbatical, I was staying in a beachfront hotel whose first floor was destroyed when the waves hit. From the perspective of a survivor, a participant and a witness, I wrote a series of stories and follow-ups that were picked up by newspapers across the United States and in at least six countries. Oversaw a full-time staff of seven and 12 stringers and columnists. Was responsible for daily features section, weekly entertainment magazine and weekly travel section for an E.W. Scripps-owned newspaper with a circulation of 50,000 daily, 75,000 Sundays. Through my leadership, we were able to increase the number of stories about local people and allot the necessary time to devote to special projects. Wrote a regular Sunday column and award-winning stories on environmentalism in Cuba, healthcare in Haiti, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and the role of fresh water in Florida’s environment.
