My duties, as a senior medical officer in Emergency Medicine/General Medicine department are as follows. • Being responsible for immediate patient care including adequate history taking, physical examination, ongoing continuous review of patient’s condition and progress, investigations and therapy indicated by unit protocol and as directed by duty specialist. Determining and facilitating discharge of patient, with guidance from duty specialist. • Performing specialized procedures on the direction and under supervision of the duty specialist. • Communicating and coordinating effectively with duty specialists, nurses and allied health staff with regard to expediting multidisciplinary management plans. • Attending to medical emergencies at Emergency treatment unit and General Medical unit under the guidance of duty specialist. • Communicating with the patient regarding his/her condition and management plan, or with the immediate family if the patient is unconscious or otherwise unable to comprehend or consent. • Complying with the policies and requirements of the Sri Lanka Medical Council and local protocols of District General Hospital Hambantota. • Mentoring and carrying out teaching activities for junior medical officers, intern medical officers and medical students.
