In my role as an Assistant Director of Meteorology at the Flood Risk Assessment Unit (FRAU), I have been actively engaged in a wide range of technical tasks related to flood risk assessment, climate analysis, and hydrological modeling. My responsibilities primarily involve the analysis of meteorological and hydrological data, with a special focus on stations located in the Punjab region. This encompasses the comprehensive examination of historical records for rainfall, temperature, and discharge patterns. To gain deeper insights into climate trends, I have conducted rigorous examinations of temperature and rainfall data, identifying significant shifts and patterns over time. I have also employed frequency analysis techniques to better understand the distribution and probability of rainfall events, an essential component in flood risk assessment. In addition, I have contributed to the development of hydrological models tailored to forecast floods during the monsoon season. These models have been applied to key locations including the Chenab at Marala headworks, Mangla Dam at Jehlum, and the Nullahs drain in the Chenab and Ravi river basins. Additionally, I have participated in field surveys following flood inundations and collaborated with GIS teams to create flood inundation maps. Currently, my work has extended into the critical area of climate change impact assessment, particularly as it pertains to future water availability and changes in hydrological behavior in river systems. This involves forecasting how climate change may influence flood patterns and river dynamics in the years to come, a crucial component in adapting to evolving environmental challenges. Overall, my role at FRAU involves a multifaceted approach to flood risk assessment, combining meteorological and hydrological expertise with the use of advanced modeling and technology to enhance our understanding of climate trends and their implications for flood management and mitigation. Field Survey: Measuring hydrology of an area is the key to give life to a single particle of soil. Water quality assessment was a challenging yet fulfilling experience. My primary responsibility was to collect water samples from different sources such as villages, groundwater, canals and ponds in cities across Punjab. These samples were then analyzed to assess their physical and chemical properties, with a particular focus on parameters like Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), fluoride, iron, arsenic, Temperature, Turbidity and pH levels. Site Selection: The Second step in developing a water plantation scheme is selecting a suitable site. This involves a thorough assessment of potential locations, considering factors such as water availability, land suitability, and proximity to demand centers. Electric Resistivity Survey: One of the key steps in assessing site feasibility is conducting an electric resistivity survey with ERS team. Such as Identifying Water Sources & Mapping Geological Features. Soil Sampling: Once the electric resistivity survey provides insights into the subsurface conditions, the next step is soil sampling. Soil samples are collected from different depths and locations within the site to analyze their physical and chemical properties. Statistical Analysis: It is the backbone of any data-driven assessment, particularly in environmental and agricultural projects like soil and water quality assessments for feasibility reporting. The insights gained through statistical analysis provide a solid foundation for informed decision-making, ensuring that water and soil management schemes are not only feasible but also environmentally responsible and sustainable. Final Plant Proposal (Feasibility Reporting): This proposal outlines the specific water plantation scheme, including the selection of suitable plant species, irrigation methods, and infrastructure requirements. It also includes cost estimates, timelines, and environmental considerations. Show less
