In April 2012 I was invited to interview for a role I had formerly occupied when I was on secondment to UKPN on behalf of Currie & Brown. UKPN were looking to build a Commercial team to manage the ‘Customer Connections’ account and take responsibility to comply with all commercial regulatory requirements to Ofgem. After being appointed in the role I have helped develop the Commercial the team from 10 members to the 18 members (team size at time of departing the role). This involved developing a strategy which would ensure the business requirements would be met and writing business cases to get the vacancies approved, as well as interviewing candidates. I managed my team to report costs on circa 5000 jobs per annum. The Commercial team are responsible for generating monthly Director reports. Reports also used for Ofgem regulatory reporting. Commercially responsible for ‘Connections’ account which in total was worth £80m per annum (across South East and London). The role also often involved dispute resolution with both appointed Contractors and Connections’ customers. Other responsibilities of role included; Ensure all construction activity carried out on behalf of the business was administered in an efficient way to ensure positive commercial outcome for all stakeholders. Monthly account meetings with the Head of Customer Connections South East to review whether we had achieved our financial targets and if not what could be done to accelerate turnover for the business which operates on a deferred income basis. Introducing real time processes such as a variation process, completion certificates and final account statements to overcome problems the business had encountered in the past. Administering all contractor variation claims, drafting final accounts, resolving disputes, submitting reports to the stakeholders as well as acting as the business’ interface with key customers such as local authorities and councils.
