An incredible summer Intern position with the City of Atlanta's Immigration Defense Unit, a unit within the City of Atlanta's Public Defenders. The Unit deals with legal issues that arise within the unique intersection between immigration law and criminal law, known as crimmigration. The Immigration Defense Unit represents non-citizens in removal proceedings due to criminal convictions. In addition to the Unit's representation of detained non-citizens in removal proceedings, the Unit aids public defender's representing non-citizen clients accused of criminal offenses by informing the attorneys of possible immigration consequences if their client is to plea to the accused offenses. The Federal Defender Program, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia represents defendants accused of a variety of federal offenses who cannot afford counsel before the United States District Court, Northern District of Georgia, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. An internship with the Federal Defender's program included first-hand experiences meeting, communicating, and working with clients. Gave interns the opportunity to appear in court on behalf of clients, alongside a leading attorney. The internship required thorough research on evidentiary issues. Most importantly, the internship gave me the opportunity to learn from fantastic Federal Defenders who are dedicated to providing the highest quality legal representation to their clients. Show less
