Bio
Amali, AMALI
Abdur Rahim Safi and I studied together during the Summer of 2019 on a short course in Remote Sensing for Agricultural Water Management at IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands. Learning with Safi is what I describe as a wholesome combination of intellectual horsepower and driving appetite for learning through hard work. He strikes me as a young man with an inquiring mind, critical but not petty and not given to flattery, highly confident yet unassuming. Particularly, his critical analytical skills were instrumental in his collaboration across teams to define and deliver on required goals and objectives during group tasks. Safi has a reputation for being firm, fair, with a voracious appetite for knowledge and research. He is a "one-pass" learner, internalising new concepts and ideas at an astonishing rate justifying his graduation with a distinction in Land and Water Science Engineering from IHE Delft, Institute for Water Education; the largest international graduate water education facility in the world and based in Delft, the Netherlands. I have come to admire his niche and passion for Agricultural Water Management using an array of tools and believe he has the requisite wherewithal to deliver on responsibilities that will be assigned to him on related tasks. Should you need an early career professional with a combination of passion and enthusiasm, Safi is someone who you will be delighted to have as a member of your team.

I have worked alongside Abdur Rahim Safi at Welthungerhilfe in Kabul, Afghanistan. Soon after joining as a Hydraulic Engineer, Safi managed to clear the backlog built up due to the long-term vacant position. Safi’s technical communication with the construction companies were clear and effective. He was energetic and enthusiastic for his growth; would rush to leadership institute after a busy office day. His conduct with office colleagues was professional and was a good team player. I believe that he is growing fast and the day is not far that he will hold a leading position in the Afghan water sector.

Researcher (Remote Sensing for Water/Agriculture)
-
Nov 2021 - Present
I conceptualize and design remote sensing based applications to assess and improve the performance of irrigated agriculture and wetlands. Using earth observation data, we provide relevant data analytics to the governments, donors, irrigation scheme managers, farmers, inputs suppliers and traders at all levels for appropriate planning/strategizing/intervening.

-
Geo-Analyst (Water and Agriculture)
-
Jun 2021 - Nov 2021
I translated remote sensing data to actionable information to improve crop yield and water productivity. I conceptualized and designed tools that enable users to better inform decisions with regard to crop yield and water consumption.

Apr 2020 - Jul 2020
I developed a structured approach (framework) that assists practitioners to utilize open-source remote sensing data for improving agricultural water productivity. The framework (first-of-its-kind) enables the diagnosis of crucial WP factors such as crop water stress, irrigation uniformity, crop rotation, soil salinity, nitrogen application, and soil type. The framework is published as an open-access scientific article in the Agricultural Water Management Journal (DOI: 10.1016/j.agwat.2021.107373) funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
