•In view of potential applications of gasification, the primary objective of this work was to investigate the inlet flow characteristics in an en-trained flow coal gasifier and to enhance the gasification performance as a part of research work at IIT Madras. •A turbulence model of the gasifier design was developed, and inlet flow fields of coal and oxygen were analyzed through the isothermal contour plots. •Thermal Analysis through CFD modelling was performed in ANSYS fluent and the carbon conversion and coal gas efficiency were improved by 5%.
