During my PhD, I primarily focused on a concept named TouchTokens. It is based on passive tokens with notches that can be recognized on any capacitive surface, depending on the spatial configuration of the fingers. I explored physical designs for fast prototyping of token sets that allow more interactions. Moreover, multiple recognition algorithms were developed to classify the patterns with a high level of accuracy and without any training. Additionally, several proof-of-concept applications were implemented to illustrate the different roles that passive tokens can play in an interactive system. 3 papers were published during my PhD: 2 CHI papers, plus AVI conference. I did my master thesis at the University of Bristol in Haptic wearables. I developed a technology that could help to expand the output capability of on-body interfaces to provide tactile feedback without restricting the skin as an interaction surface. SkinHaptics works by focusing ultrasound in the hand using a phased array of ultrasound transmitters and the acoustic time-reversal signal processing technique.
