Context: The research project is a partnership with automotive companies (Stellantis, Bosch, and Marelli) to enable using Brazilian ethanol as the fuel of emission-reducing innovative light vehicle engines. Responsibilities - Thermodynamic modeling (MATLAB) and experimental investigation (GC-FID; UV-VIS spectrophotometry) of the liquid-liquid behavior of ethanol fuel and its contaminants. - Writing scientific articles and technical reports for the industrial partners. - Presenting the results for research partners from the university, industrial partners, and into scientific conferences, adapting the language for each public. - Making budget orders and acquisitions of laboratory consumables and machinery maintenance. - Advising the work of two undergraduate researchers. - Supplementary work: environmental and social evaluation of using ethanol fuel and/or battery electric vehicles in Brazil. Main results - The fundamental mechanisms associated with the studied phenomenon have been identified, and practical solutions have been proposed to the industrial partners. - Up to now: publication of one scientific article and three international conference presentations. Development of a tool allowing early-project estimations of the investment cost (CAPEX) of industrial unit operations typically found in biorefineries, aiming the production of biobased products such as second generation biofuel. Responsibilities - Gather CAPEX data of many different unit operations. - Catalog such data and develop a new database. - Develop an Excel tool allowing the estimation of an unit operation's CAPEX based on a single characteristic parameter. - Interact with different teams in order to optimize the tool functionalities according to their different needs. Main results - The developed tool was highly complimented by the company's engineers, and its utilization started immediately. - I also received an excellent feedback from my managers concerning my attitude at work (how to face problems and interpersonal relationships).
