University of Washington Global Health Immersion Program (GHIP)

  Developed and implemented a technology enabled medical education project in Uganda aimed to increase early Tuberculosis case finding and improve patient outcomes - I was the first medical student from the University of Washington to travel to Northwest Uganda and establish relationships with the Arua hospital, National Community of Women Living with Aids organization, the local chapter of Doctors Without Borders, and other local organizations and community leaders - Gathered data about the most pressing local health care needs, health seeking behaviors, peoples' perceptions of their health, treatment resources and infrastructure, and delivery and adoption of health care information - Identified the key community leaders, enlisted their support, and drove alignment between the differing needs to agree on the common goal: empowering people both locally and in the remote areas of the region with knowledge on how and why to seek medical care early if experiencing TB symptoms and especially when co-infected with HIV - Created the project plan and drove the execution incrementally, allowing for adjustments based on feedback from a small audience; identified that creating a radio-like program was the most effective way to disseminate information and likely to motivate change in health seeking behaviors - Used locally available information technology resources to execute the project (mp3 enabled radios, flash drives, laptops) - Created and implemented the project in less than ten weeks with the result of delivering radio-like health education program to over 600 people across twelve different villages in the region Show less
