Julia Barke
I served in the Peace Corps with Rachel in Mali. She had begun working in a neighboring community the year before I arrived in my village - which had never before hosted a Peace Corps Volunteer. During volunteers' training period, they are sent out to their future sites for a few days--accompanied by a nearby volunteer--to meet their host communities for the first time. This is a critical period for any new volunteer - one during which they will make those essential first impressions. Rachel was the volunteer who accompanied and guided me through my site visit, and she continued to be a role model and source of advice during the remainder of her time in the Peace Corps. It was only as I spent more and more time working and living in Mali that I was able to truly appreciate how important her advice and example had been in allowing me to integrate, avoid cultural missteps and work effectively. She was greatly respected by her host community as well as the surrounding communities, to which her reputation had spread. She mastered the local language to an extent that not all volunteers can manage, integrated beautifully into Malian society, and led projects which made a lasting contribution to the health and well-being of her community. She added positively to the reputation of the Peace Corps in her area - a contribution which makes an enormous difference to the volunteers that follow. I remember my time working with her with pleasure and gratitude, and would recommend her highly to any future employer.
