Rachel is a hard worker and conducted her work independently. She is motivated and was keen to make her project progressing. She is an extremely good team member, and is very good at organising a lab practically.

Since 2014 I have been a member of Cellular Generation and Phenotyping (CGaP), a core facility at the Wellcome Trust Sanger institute. Our aim is to be a well regarded cell biology core facility, using our technical and scientific expertise to partner with faculty to deliver high quality projects for the institute. Our key expertise being to take small scale cell biology based projects, optimising them and running them at scale, taking the number of samples generated, processed or analysed from single digits up to the 100s. I was originally brought in as a Staff Scientist to support and optimise the HipSci project and as of the end of 2014 I took over as lead on this project within CGaP.Since working at CGaP I have applied my skills in change management to introduce methodologies focused on workplace efficiency to help support our high throughput aims. Over the 2-3 years we have pulled together as a department to change the culture in which we work, utilising tools such as capacity planning, scheduling and 5S as standard practise. Show less

I joined Horizon Discovery in 2011 as Line Manager for the Cell Banking Team within the larger Cell Validation Unit, during which time I project managed functional validation and product development for custom contracts. I enjoyed this time and gained much fulfilment in leading my team and assisting others in reaching their potential. However, I missed the challenges presented by research. In late 2012 a position opened up in the Technology Development Department and my application for this internal position was successful. This new role involved development of adeno-associated virus (AAV) technology, thereby increasing company efficiency, reducing spending and facilitating the development of new products. Tech Dev was a high pressure environment with ever changing project priorities. I adapted well and used my enthusiasm for this work to become a key member of a productive, driven team. Some of my responsibilities and achievements during this time include: • Delegation of tasks and management of resources to meet deadlines; • Development of SOPs which resulted in a doubling of product output from my team; • Completion of performance reviews and successful career coaching; • Creation of successful systems of inter-departmental communication; • Training of team members in COSHH; • Design and implementation of novel high throughput protocols; • Successful completion of a £100,000 custom contract to a high level of customer satisfaction, with the product becoming a standard catalogue line; • Manipulation of cellular behaviour in order to increase AAV targeting efficiency; • Simultaneous management of multiple projects and communication of progress at a corporate level; • Adaptation to a high pressure environment with ever changing priorities. Having completing my PhD in 2011, my supervisor, recognising my organisation, time management and communication skills, employed me to assist in the execution of a substantial lab move from the University of Liverpool to the University of Manchester . The relocation was completed successfully, on-time and to budget. The work involved: • Liaising with both contractors and scientists; • Assisting in laboratory layout design; • Insuring health and safety regulations were met; • Inventorying existing laboratory equipment and organising purchase of new apparatus; • Organising the safe transportation of bio-hazardous material and relocation of laboratory cell stocks. It was at this point that I realised my attributes were well aligned to the demands of project management. Show less

Investigated the heat shock response in human T-cell leukaemia cell-lines, drawing links between heat shock protein expression (hsp) and mode of cell death. Also worked in collaboration with Chester zoo, analysing hormone expression in pregnant Spider monkey urine samples.
