    • K-8 General Music Teacher
      • Aug 2017 - Jul 2019

      - Taught General Music to a wide range of students from grades K-8 (900 in total), including the gifted program, ELL students, SPED students, PACE students, and students in the Pathways program. The two levels were split during the year, teaching K-4 in the first semester and 5-8 in the second. -K-4 General Music: vocal skills, learning to match pitch, singing alone and with others, learning to compose, preparing repertoire for school concerts, the Recorder Karate program, Kodaly/Orff-based lessons, conducting skills, music notation, instrument families, movement-based activities, using percussion instruments, and exposing students to the classical genre, specifically Carnival of the Animals. For the younger ages especially, I placed a lot of emphasis on movement through music, allowing them to be creative and engaged. -5-8 General Music: project-based learning, working in small groups, and some whole-group instruction. Students completed research projects on musical instruments, learned how to compose using various techniques and instrumentation, learned about the techniques of rap music and how to create and perform their own rap songs, learned the basics of guitar, ukulele, and piano, and how to play simple melodies and chords on each. -Technology: Google Classroom, Google docs, Google sheets, Google slides, Chromebooks and iPads, Mimeo technology, and recording technology to enhance hands-on student learning. -My goal was to meet my students where they were, share appreciation for their interests, and try to mold them into becoming good musicians. I placed value on performance-based assessments and activities to expose my students to the art of performing and how to be successful. Show less

      • Feb 2016 - Jun 2016

Worked as the long-term sub Instrumental Music Teacher for Collins Middle School, directing 6th-8th grade bands, jazz band, and pit orchestra. I conducted 5 concerts over the course of the 5-month position, all of which were very successful. In choosing repertoire, I always tried to challenge my students and teach them that with practice and commitment, anything was possible. I frequently exposed them to Grade 3+ level music and consistently challenged them to play with good intonation, rhythmic and melodic accuracy, and good phrasing. One memorable piece was the difficult arrangement of The Force Awakens, where during the battle scene, I incorporated props and costumes to create more excitement and have the audience connect with the music of Star Wars. Following the school days, I also served as a track coach and helped coach the athletes during practices and traveled to all of the meets. Show less
