Another diverse and specialised role. I prepare the diets for the entire zoo collection including lions, cheetah, primates, native animals and a variety of birds. I order and coordinate resources and prepare an extensive range of diets and encounter food. I also care for any off- exhibit/holding room animals as well as feeding out prepared diets to a range of animals in the AM. A recent highlight was raising a leucistic western grey kangaroo Joey. • May 2018 - Apr 2020

My role centred around the husbandry of a couple of thousand funnel-web spiders 🕷. I managed the daily running of the spider nursery, including rostering and developing procedures and records keeping systems for this new initiative. I was responsible for training and supervising volunteers, prioritising tasks and problem solving issues as they arose. I excelled at collaborating with staff as well as liaising with various collection points across Sydney including hospitals and vets. I was extremely successful in the field locating habitat of both spiders and egg sacs and learnt to ‘milk’ male funnel-webs to extract venom for The Australian Reptile Parks life-saving anti-venom program. My role also included less serious tasks with Guest Experiences and I was proud to co-create the ‘Adult keeper for a day’ tour which received rave reviews. I’m committed to conservation programs initiated by the Australian Reptile Park to save threatened species from extinction. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working at Aussie Ark (previously Devil Ark) as a zoo keeper and was involved in multiple promotional, educational and fundraising activities. Show less

Educational talks are my speciality. Teaching has provided a strong foundation and I have demonstrated an aptitude for creating interesting, informative and amusing shows particularly about native animals and their conservation ( I.e. koalas, reptiles and cassowary). A professionally trained educator I thrive in a teaching and learning environment and excel at mentoring, training and encouraging others. I can confidently manage and instruct volunteers including training and developing Workplace skills and WH&S. I'm an experienced animal handler and proficient in animal husbandry which is maintained at a high standard. I have a proven track record of contributing to a positive work environment and I'm a cooperative and effective team member. I enjoy being customer focused and in the 'smile industry', helping others have a great day appreciating animals. ☺ I believe Education makes a big difference in wildlife conservation with research showing that people exposed to nature at a young age are more likely to grow up to respect and conserve it. I particularly enjoy working with school groups and special interest groups. Facilitating this really brings me joy and I see it as meaningful and important work. Show less

    • Zoo keeper/Aquarist/tour guide-permanent

My role at Irukandji had a strong conservation agenda: working as a Tour guide/Aquarist, advocating for sharks and rays as well as healthy oceans and the need for human change! Task included being a front of house person; explaining briefly the highlights of the adventure, answering questions, reassuring and encouraging people to 'jump in' as well as managing money. I fitted guests for wetsuits/waders, provided safety instructions and key points which were explained with props (fake shark to demonstrate patting and feeding, stingray barb to discuss how risks were managed and how barbs work). I made every effort to ensure everyone was excited and confident including guests of various backgrounds and abilities, children and non-English speaking visitors. The companies goals are to promote healthy seas and to change preconceived ideas about sharks and rays through hands on interactions and Education. During the journey major ocean issues were threaded through the tour such as the problem with plastics, over fishing and the risks of eating shark flesh (which is high in mercury), the cruelty of shark finning, the need for apex predators, and guests were lead to understand that we are not a sharks preferred food source. I provided simple, everyday strategies we can all use to 'be the change we want to see'. The tour was EDU-taining and had to be flexible and pitched to the audience available as well as their interest level. It involved fun, safe interactions such as feeding sharks and rays from 'feeding sticks' and patting both small and large animals. Tours also covered species types, habitat, biology etc. and their conservation status. Additionally, my role included: animal husbandry, careful observation of animal health, ensuring interactions were appropriate to animal welfare, maintaining consistency in animal conditioning and ensuring our guests had an amazing and memorable time!
