Bio
Brina Furman
Rabbi Jessica Shimberg is nothing short of remarkable. My final year of college, Rabbi Jessica started her role at the University of Maryland's Hillel. I had the pleasure of meeting her early on in her time at the Hillel and worked with her through means of the Jewish Leadership Council. However, my admiration for her grew immensely as she staffed a service trip to Ethiopia I traveled on. As a participant, I could not have asked for a more supportive, knowledgeable and caring staff person. The work that we partook in was both physically and emotionally challenge; Shimberg was constantly there to support us in any means possible. She was always a positive energy, encouraging us to challenge ourselves and step outside of our comfort zones. I personally struggled with many aspects of the trip; Shimberg noticed my difficulties, believed in me and talked with me for hours about my thoughts. When we returned from the service trip, Shimberg's encouragement did not cease - it only grew. She helped a group of students found JDC-U, a group dedicated to raising awareness and funds for global humanitarian work. Shimberg will do anything for her students and always looks for the next way to help them, the campus and the Jewish community.
