    • 1 - 100 Employee
    • Product Manager
      • Apr 2022 - Present

Responsible for managing Avalanche Canada's technology products from concept to end of life. Chief evangelist for tightly scoped and well shaped Agile product development that truly adds value. I work closely with an extremely talented group of software engineers to deliver winning products that support public safety across Canada.

    • Project Manager
      • May 2018 - Apr 2022

My team and I have designed, built and shipped a number of software products that address complex challenges including a bespoke application used to forecast natural phenomena (avalanches & weather), data visualization dashboards that amalgamate thousands of disparate sources into clean visualizations where patterns become clear for the user, and a platform that allows avalanche forecasters to produce live hazard analysis for highway personal working in avalanche terrain. I actively manage and inspire well-organized projects from kick off to completion, working with a diverse team in Kanban style to stay in scope and deliver high-quality projects on time, on schedule and on budget. Perhaps most importantly, we have fun with our iterative style, working to create wins as a team while living in a beautiful region of the pacific northwest. Show less

    • Senior Avalanche Forecaster
      • Nov 2011 - Apr 2022

I analyze a complex, multivariate data set consisting of disparate snow, avalanche and mountain weather information to create a model of current avalanche conditions. I then produce a unique, easy to comprehend forecast that the public uses to make informed choices in backcountry avalanche terrain. I love working with other people in demanding situations, and I have an absolute passion for public speaking. I regularly interact with the media doing everything from local radio to live national television, representing AvCan during times of heightened avalanche danger and helping the public to understand fatal avalanche incidents. I provide mentorship to junior team members and deliver both public and professional outreach presentations. I have managed numerous special projects, including a pilot project for the province of British Columbia (BC) which examines the cost of developing public avalanche safety products in Northern BC. I also managed a project for Recreation Sites and Trails BC where I used GIS tools augmented by site visits to assess the need for avalanche safety plans for all of BC’s managed snowmobile areas. • Utah Avalanche Center
    • Salt Lake City, Utah
    • Avalanche Forecaster, Business Manager & Educator
      • Nov 2007 - Oct 2011

The Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) keeps people on top of the greatest snow on earth, instead of buried beneath it. As a business manager and educator I was responsible for web advertising, developing/maintaining sponsor relationships, consulting on website design and developing business & marketing plans. I wrote grant proposals on behalf of the UAC for funding & equipment. Along with my team, I spoke to 25,000 middle/high school students every year through the Know Before You Go Avalanche Awareness program. I also taught recreational avalanche classes. As an Avalanche Forecaster with the UAC I regularly conducted solo fieldwork on skis and snowmobiles in complex terrain in order to produce public avalanche forecasts, investigate avalanche accidents & act as a media liaison with my investigations. I also provided county search and rescue teams with avalanche safety & rescue training. Show less
