I research the formation (know as "genesis") of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin. My work investigates the interactions between atmospheric waves -- such as African Easterly Waves and Convectively-Coupled Kelvin Waves -- and how they can make tropical cyclone formation more or less likely. I also study the predictability of tropical cyclone formation and the relative influence of scale-interactions. Student Research Assistant
-
Apr 2017 - Jun 2019
Research assistant studying tropical cyclone formation and intensity in past climates under the direction of Dr. Robert Korty. Tasks include processing and analyzing data from climate models, writing MATLAB and python code, and visualizing data output. I primarily assist Dr. Korty in studying the thermodynamic properties and stability of the tropical atmosphere and how its evolution affects the suitability of the environment that spawns tropical storms. Part of this effort involves studying model-generated cyclones in different climates. The primary goal is to use this information to better understand how storms fundamentally depend on properties of the underlying environment in which they develop.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistant
-
Jan 2019 - May 2019
Undergraduate teaching assistant in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences for ATMO-321: Computer Applications in the Atmospheric Sciences, taught by Andrew Dessler. The course primarily teaches the use of Python 3 in data analysis applications, with a focus on applications relating to the atmospheric sciences. My responsibilities include:• Assist Dr. Dessler in teaching Python and related applications, four (4) contact hours a week.• Help students in understanding the course material and in completing course assignments during office hours, (2) hours a week.• Grade homework assignments turned in by students, two-four (2-4) hours a week. • Provide Dr. Dessler feedback on course organization, student progress, and other course-related tasks.

Research Intern
-
Jun 2018 - Aug 2018
I was a student intern at the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), with a research focus on hurricane modeling using the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) system. • Led a project analyzing hurricane convection in HWRF output in comparison to observational studies and other modeling systems. •Developed a methodology to evaluate HWRF convection using a partitioning algorithm and Contoured Frequency by Altitude Diagrams (CFADs), which will be used by EMC in future annual evaluations of HWRF. •Collaborated with scientists both within EMC and at external institutions, becoming familiar with Research-to-Operations activities. •Conducted data analysis using Python and shell commands, interfacing with NOAA High Performance Computing systems.
