  A Dean's tenure at IISER Mohali is for three years. Currently, there are five Deans : Dean of Faculty; Dean of Academics; Dean of Research & Development; Dean of Students; and Dean of Outreach. All Deans continue to teach (as teaching faculty) and carry out research (as scientists), while also performing administrative tasks. I am the fourth Dean of Faculty, since the institute's beginnings .(excluding periods when this position was held by the Institute's Director).

  This is a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Frontier Areas of Science and Technology (FAST) under the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Government of India. The Center is funded by the MHRD for four years, beginning September 2014. Presently, there are seven research groups (derived from the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemical Sciences, at IISER Mohali) which are in this Center.

  Five IISERs have been set up - since 2007- in Pune, Kolkata, Mohali (Chandigarh), Bhopal and Trivandrum, to become the equivalent of the IITs for science education, and to function like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, where research excellence is concerned.

  The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, has selected IISER Mohali's proposal to set up a Technology Business Incubator (TBI) on campus, with funding from DST for five years. The formal approval was given by the DST in April, 2016, and IISER Mohali is currently setting up the TBI. I am the Coordinator and Prof. Anand K Bachhawat is the Co-coordinator.   IISER Mohali began as a monolithic entity in 2007, with all faculty covered within the same large group. Then four major departments were set up in 2012, beginning June 01, 2012. I headed the Department of Biological Sciences as its Founder Head. The tenure of a Head is for three years. On May 31, 2015, all four Heads were asked to continue for a further two months, until July 31, 2015.
