      • 2011 - Present

The Vascular Bionics laboratory is a group of multi-disciplinary researchers developing minimally-invasive brain machine interface technologies capable of recording and stimulating brain activity and has collaborated with over 150 people from more than 55 local and international companies, universities and organisations. We hope to offer a novel treatment to patients with paralysis caused by spinal cord injury, stroke and traumatic limb amputation. The group maintains a focus on clinical translation and demonstrated a successful first-in-human clinical trial at the Department of Neurology, Royal Melbourne Hospital beginning in 2019. The laboratory has raised over $27M in funding since 2012, including from DARPA and the NHMRC. Show less

As part of the Bionic Vision Australia (now Bionic Vision Technologies), CERA was involved in the design, development, preclinical testing and clinical trial of a bionic eye, demonstrating the clinical significance of a suprachoroidal retinal prosthesis to restore rudimentary vision to the profoundly blind. Three initial participants with retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration were implanted in 2014 with the multi-channel stimulation system. The Orthopaedics and Gait Laboratory at the Royal Children's Hospital and Monash Medical Centre conducted a multi-centre RCT to optimise clinical management of young children with severe spasticity and Cerebral Palsy. Through design and development of a measurement apparatus optimal Botox injection frequency was identified.
