Don't even think that the future is in correlation to the past. The evolution of technology and the resultant abundance of information, creates a gap for humans to ensure our place and relevance given that we mostly remain who we are as humans. In contracts, artificial intelligence is going through significant revolutions and the power of that should be explored, not ignored. Will cyber physical systems in the future take over the work that we prepare ourselves and the way the global economies perceive their strategies and successes? How do we capacitate ourselves across all industries to embrace technologies and own them rather than them owning us? Or does it not matter? I believe that we have a role to play in the development of people to ensure future global sustainability. While the SDGs go a long way to ensure our survival, there are new factors that may impact on our future world view. These need to be investigated. One concept to explore is that of a smart University. Although the term is emerging, its components are necessary but will differ given the specific environment that the university operates in. Another concept is that of the entrepreneurial university. Universities are required to become financially self-sufficient. How do we obtain third stream income whilst not necessarily set up as a business? How do universities operate in the competing environment of ranking? How does this impact on the specific strategy and model that the university adopt? This leads me to the components of relevance and excellence in a Higher Education context. Show less
