Dr. Beate Blank is the founder of the first shelter for homeless women and their children in the former Federal Republic of Germany in 1980. In an empty factory facility a empowerment project did emerge as a participatory housing and working self-organization and self-help-group. The empowerment concept has been unique in its holistic approach and a specific linkage between education, working, health, creativity and talent promotion. In 1999 130 women (43% immigrants) were employed in 12 branches and various trainings. Due to the constant growing the organization has been devided into two parts: a women's social enterprise ZORA gGmbH and a housing project with 40 appartments for homeless women under the roof of the mother organization ArbeiterInnen-Selbsthilfe e.V.. Both organizations are still running. Show less
