Nautilus - Air Sea drone A team of students from Florida Institute of Technology, consisting of nine aerospace engineers, two electrical engineers, and two ocean engineers, worked together to develop a hybrid drone that would operate in both air and underwater, a feat attempted by a previous team. In order to achieve this, the project had eight subsystems which was developed side-by-side: aerodynamics, structures, ocean, propulsion, electronics & avionics, communications, controls, and software. The goal was to put them all together in order to create a hybrid air/sea drone that would be capable of doing the task of extending the surveillance range of a submerged submarine. The Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV), named “Nautilus”, is capable of sustained, steady flight and submerged operations, transitioning between air and sea modes at will under its own power. A typical mission would consist of the following series of operations: surfacing after being released by the submarine, transitioning to air mode and taking off, flight, landing and transition to sea operation, then swimming. While in flight, Nautilus will stream first-person video to an operating station so the pilot can control the aircraft, as well as use it for air surveillance. Unlike current attempts by other universities and companies to create a submersible drone, Nautilus will be fixed wing and resemble a standard aircraft, it is not a multi-copter design. •Pioneered “Nautilus“ as the Systems Engineer – a hybrid drone that would operate both in air and underwater. •Designed, analyzed, and assembled the mounts of the critical parts that withholds the drone. •Facilitated structural engineer in the manufacturing process of the drone’s fuselage using fiber glass. •Coordinated the smooth assembly of all subsystems and scheduled the work breakdown structure for subsystem engineers in the project. •Executed tasks like budgeting, documentation (PDR & CDR) and preparation of safety templates.
