My 3 weeks at the IEA involved participating in lectures, discussions, readings and workshops that gave many insights into free market ideas, the political economy and how think tanks operate. The sessions also involved critical analysis and discussion of prescribed readings on the topics of classical liberal thinking. Another key activity was actively debating on key aspects of the political economy, both as a formal debate and in general discussions. My team and I were debating against the imposition of a Universal Basic Income in the UK.I also had the opportunity to conduct and present my own research project which aimed to answer the question "What is the best solution to solve the plastic pollution problem?"

    • Finance and Professional Services Intern
      • Jun 2020 - Jul 2020

Over this 3 day internship experience, I gained many insights into the world of finance and professional services, with the first day consisting of many interesting and informative sessions on sectors such as Accountancy, Commercial and Retail Banking and Tax and Audit. On the second day we were given an individual task to complete which would reflect the sort of work a graduate would be doing. We had to create a business proposal for an imaginary company in order to present to them all the different ways in which they could use our services. Through this I was not only able to work on my presentation building skills, but also on my research and my presentation delivery too.

    • Consulting Intern
      • Jun 2020 - Jun 2020

Over this 3 day internship experience I was able to gain many insights into different aspects of the consulting industry. The first day consisted of various seminars and workshops which built on knowledge about different types of consulting such as strategic, management and change management, as well as providing us with hits and tips on building essential skills such as organisation, team work and leadership. The second day involved being given an independent task that reflected the job of a graduate consultant. We had one day to present a customer loyalty plan to our imaginary chocolate brand client. This project helped me to gain skills such as skim reading and selection of a good range of sources as well as reminding me about directing presentations and their format towards our client, rather than always having the same structure.

      • Oct 2016 - Nov 2016

Over the course of the work experience, I was exposed to a different department of hotel every day. Whilst working in the leisure centre, I was expected to comply with hygiene and safety standards as well as respond to customer requests to be signed in. I also managed the pool area by maintaining its cleanliness and making sure that the leisure area offers a pleasant experience for customers. Working in the hotel restaurant gave me further customer facing experience.Working in the HR department allowed me to explore an employee centred part of the Marriott, where I was tasked with auditing employee profiles and updating their paperwork. I was also given other general administrative activities such as opening and arranging letters.Whilst in the Sales and Marketing department, I was tasked with forecasting future event plans and comparing different marketing mediums for these events, after which, I used the hotel’s operating software to create business report of these upcoming events. This report was also later used in the managers' meeting, which I was invited to attend. Finally, working in the Finance department involved tasks such as: hotel banking activities and the allocation of funds to airline staff who were partnered with the Marriott, as well as feeding invoices into the hotel’s computer systems.
