      As a Social Work Fellow, my work focus was on crucial socio-legal fieldwork relating to cases of undertrial prisoners and in ensuring that the undertrial prisoner is provided quality legal representation. My Responsibilities included: Visiting the Prisons, interacting with undertrial prisoners, identifying individuals who need legal aid from the DLSA and supporting them in writing applications to DLSA. Identifying undertrial prisoners entitled for bail/early release and referring such cases to the DLSA and the Prison Authorities. Socio-legal casework interventions and handholding undertrial prisoners through the legal proceedings at both the pre-trial and trial stages. Home visits and working with families of undertrials in gathering information/documents relevant to their case. Coordinating with other authorities if required for gathering relevant documents like age proof, address proof, medical certificates etc. Identifying special needs of undertrials including pregnancy, claims for juvenility, disability, terminal illnesses, mental health issues etc. Show less

      The Commonwealth has been observing electoral processes for over four decades. In that time, more than 160 elections have been observed in nearly 40 countries. Mandate: Commonwealth Observers Group (COGs) are given the mandate to observe and consider the factors affecting the credibility of the electoral process as a whole. Observers judge whether the elections have been conducted according to the standards for democratic elections to which the country has committed itself, including national legislation and relevant regional, Commonwealth and international commitments. Methodology: Each COG is constituted by the Secretary-General following an invitation or welcome from a country’s election commission or government. The COG arrives in the country ahead of polling day and meets with a broad range of stakeholders, including: • the electoral commission • major political parties • media • civil society groups Observers are then deployed in teams across the country, where they assess: • pre-election environment • voting • counting • results processes • I was deployed as one of the seventeenth Election Observers of the Commonwealth Election Observation Mission in Zambia. • Worked with a panel of high-level election observers with a background of Former Minister, Politician, Head of Election Commission, Parliamentarian, Ombudsman, Human Rights Activist, Ambassador, Journalist, Academicians to observe the National Parliamentary Elections in the Republic of Zambia. • Received intensive training on Election observation mechanism, promotion of democracy. • Managed to interview local civil societies, Youth Group, journalists, political parties and prepared policy notes for the Commonwealth Observer Group (COG). • Conducted election observation mission with election observers team in the different districts specific polling station. Prepared the individual observation report and supported in writing the final election observation report. Show less
