During this time, I worked on understanding the role of polysaccharide O-acetylation in plants and how we can exploit it to produce bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass. By using gene modification techniques, I altered the cell wall O-acetylation in Arabidopsis and Populus. I characterized the cell wall with modified O-acetylation by using analytical methods like GC-MS, NMR and wet chemistry methods. One of the main finding of this work was that O-acetylation can be modulated to reduce recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass.
