I started a club at my school two years ago called, "One Blood For Life" partnered with Canadian Blood Services. The main purpose of my club was to raise awareness of the importance of blood and stem cell donations. Students came together at least twice a week to help plan events that will help spread the importance of blood donations while recruiting students and sign up to volunteer. These recruitment events have inspired many of my fellow classmates that are 17 and older to go out and donate blood and get their cheek swabbed for stem cell donations. Being in a South Asian community, it can be hard for many to find a match as it is rare to be matched. With this club, I have not only gained leadership skills but also learned how to take on a challenge with a team. Show less

For four summers I learned a script to inform guests visiting the PNE Prize Home of its features, sponsors and prizing. I had to meet and greet guest in a courteous and professional matter. I worked with a great team of co-workers to keep all things running smoothly. For four summers I learned a script to inform guests visiting the PNE Prize Home of its features, sponsors and prizing. To support the feminism movement I started a club at my school last year called, “Girls Can Talk.” This club creates a safe space for everyone to come and discuss the social issues surrounding women in the world. I frequently hear students’ personal stories on these issues and see how much work remains. As a student, I can’t change the laws in the world, but I can use this club platform to educate others. A team of three high school girls, including me, were given $100 to use to get our business started. We came up with the idea to make wooden banners out of upcycled wood and mason jars. Each banner had a unique and personalized saying on it. We called our brand “Uplift.” Our main goal with this product was to spread awareness about mental health. We recognized that mental health is an issue that isn’t openly talked about and often a topic to shy away from. We made a profit of over $700 in just over a couple of months, and 20% of our profits went towards the Canadian Mental Health Association. The message behind our brand was spread all over social media and ended up getting recognized by a well-known musician and mental health activist, Meredith O’Connor. Even though at the end of the competition we didn’t place, we were recognized with the title of “Most Improved Business.” This experience taught me a lot, not only how to run a business but also learning how to work and communicate with a team. My interest sparked in pursuing a career involving computer science when I participated in a competition called Girls Technovation. Technovation is the world’s largest global tech entrepreneurship competition for young girls aiming to provide the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to spring up as tech entrepreneurs. Bootcamps and pitch workshops organized by Technovation helped me gain knowledge to participate in this competition. I managed to code and build an app that took the user through stories of underprivileged homes in India. My apps’ purpose was to raise awareness about poverty and gender bias overlaps that create toxic environments for young children living at-risk. Show less
