  I teach the Bible and preach the gospel. Music has been a gateway for me while working with youth and adults through the years. I formed an outreach band with our youth group which was active for five years (2004-2008) and recorded nine CD collections of songs, many of them original. Currently I am very active in the black gospel community in central North Carolina, having played with several groups, and now heading my own group, Pastor Powell & Praise, with black, white, and Latino members, plus a teenager! Our first group CD was released in 2019. In 2012 I self-published a book entitled Out Of Order: The Self-Destruction of a Mainline Denomination, which is available for purchase on Amazon.com. In 2013 I successfully brought myself and my congregation out of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and into the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Show less



Hallsville Presbyterian Church

  I pastored the Hallsville Church 8 years. I prepared and led worship, including doing all of the secretarial duties. I led the youth group and founded the Young Adult Sunday School Class. I taught many Bible studies; supplied for the tiny Salem Presbyterian Church for 7 years; fulfilled my presbytery obligations, serving on presbytery council, chairing the Sessional Records committee, and as commissioner to Synod (1992) and General Assembly (1994). I wrote and directed two musicals, had my own Christian rock radio show at WSLE in Wallace (1990-1992), and researched and wrote a large oral history of the church entitled Scenic Routes. Show less
