My mornings are spent supporting a child in reception with ASC and ADHD. I work largely unsupervised, helping the child to make progress towards his targets, as presented on his Provision Plan. I'm developing my use of total communication as the child has limited functional language. Afternoons are spent with the rest of the class fulfilling regular TA responsibilities. These include assisting the class teacher with the education, supervision and welfare of pupils to ensure they attain targets set, and delivering interventions to groups of specified pupils or individuals as outlined on Provision Plans in order to support them with their learning and raise levels of achievement and attainment. Every Tuesday from 5-6pm after work, I volunteer at a school in Dalston alongside a Primary school teacher designing and taking fun educational sessions with Rainbows. Rainbows are girls aged from 5 to 7 years old, and activities are organised around six core areas: Know myself, Be well, Express myself, Take action, Have adventures, Skills for my future. From 6-7pm I take the Brownies with another volunteer. Brownies are girls aged from 7 to 10 years old and we follow the same core themes, designing interesting activities and building life skills that not all girls may have the opportunity to learn in their home or school environment. While at Queen's House, I took the opportunity to develop a school club. Activities included stuffing and sewing toys, constructing felt bird mobiles, sewing Christmas stockings and making snow globes. This gave me the chance to get to know the children in a less formal setting and had a positive impact on our relationship back in the classroom. One week assisting in a Year 2 classroom, and another overseeing the whole school program. I worked closely with a child with ASC, often setting aside the standard workbooks in favour of interactive resources. This encouraged him to engage with the topic and lessen the frustration. I learnt the importance of gentle assertiveness through calm and empathetic direction. One week assisting in a Year 2 classroom, and another overseeing the whole school program. In my role as a teaching assistant at a language summer school in Switzerland, I supported the teacher in orchestrating play-led activities within a multilingual group. I saw how play-specific sessions can be integral to the social and emotional development of children and their interactions.
