  Got back to the old gig, old position, but without mangement, deployments, montioring enhancement, software debug and everything else. Working on the monitoring of a large and globally distributed network of metering devices and deploying the related management applications. The monitoring itself is done by Nagios, our tools are anslble, python, Django and of course a lot of ancient shell and perl scripts. During the period I worked there, I was the first engineer in Budapest in this department, and besides the engineering work I was responsible to grow that team for a larger one, I take part all the recruitment and the mentoring of the new colleagues, I was considered as the de facto team lead in the Budapest team.   In this gig I was working for a short time for Wikimedia Foundation as DBA for their MySQL cluster. In this job I was responsible in a small (3 person) team for a database cluster where all the Wikipedia data was kept. It was quite an interesting job, I worked with MySQL/MariaDB clusters here on Linux servers. The automation scripts were created in bash, the IAAC code was puppet.   Technically the same company as Gawker, but with a new owner. We moved the entire platform from physical datacenters to AWS, and we changed all the underlying technologies. The databases were moved to RDS/Aurora (MySQL compatible) and all the applications got containerized, and served from Kubernetes. We were heavily using Cloudformation and pipelines for platform management. My work beside common DBA related work was system automation - mostly with AWS API.   I worked as a DBA in a system, which used about 50 MySQL servers. All the database server operations were automated by me, like backups, or new replica creation. In our stack, we used Ansible for process automation, Puppet for server configuration management, Jenkins for triggering jobs. I also participated in ansible project as creating the mysql-replication, and the mysql-variables modules. Both of the projects become part of the official ansible release. We are heavily using Percona software, like percona-toolkit or xtrabackup. We had a few months of work on migrating the entire system to Google Cloud Platform. The project was never finished, but we spent about 6 months on it, at the cancellation point the entire infrastructure was up and running. We had about 100M readers every month, so zero downtime was tolerated. Show less
