I am currently a Professor in the School of Science, and co-Director of Edith Cowan University's strategic research group, the Centre for People Place and Planet. In 2021 I was appointed as a Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal PLOS Water. My research interests include wetland ecosystems, health and sustainability. I'm currently involved in research on environmental management projects in Australia, the South Pacific and South-East Asia, aiming to better understand, and address, the social and environmental determinants of human health and well-being. I hold a position of Adjunct Professor in the Nulungu Institute at Notre Dame University, Broome. I have a strong affiliation with southwestern Australia, the Boodjar of the Noongar people, and draw inspiration and strength from their continued connection to, and understanding of, Country. I have had an enjoyable and rewarding time as a supervisor of more than 45 PhD and Masters by Research students who have successfully completed their studies, most in the last 20 years. I have been given a University wide excellence award in postgraduate supervision in 2014. I have held senior positions in the Australian Freshwater Sciences Society (previously Australian Society for Limnology), including as its President for a two year term 1999-2001. I was elected to the Board of Directors of Bush Heritage Australia Inc., an independent not-for-profit organisation, for the term 1999-2002. I was also elected as the founding Vice-President of the International Association for Ecology and Health (for the period 2006-2010), and was a founding Co-Editor of its journal (EcoHealth published by Springer). Between 2009 and 2015 I was a member of the Ramsar International Convention on Wetlands’ Scientific and Technical Review Panel, where I provided detailed input and coordination for the Convention's theme on Wetlands and Human Health. My publication record can be viewed on Google Scholar!
