Pia is a fantastic academic, with a passion and talent for helping people develop themselves educationally. I’m looking forward to keeping up to date with her flourishing research output, and latest pedagogical insights as her career progresses. For the past year, I had the utmost pleasure of working closely with her during my term as president of our faculty’s student organization (SOFASoS), where I envisioned a board position for Pia as our first Academic Tutor for Arts & Culture. Being an academic peer of Pia’s from the bachelor programme, her talents were quickly apparent to me after a few interactions. My envisioning and proposal for an experimental, dedicated role in our organization stemmed from my confidence in her being the right person to help us grow. You see, before Pia, every time before an exam was due to whatever course in our faculty, we would look for students who had excelled in those same courses before, and offer them an opportunity to put short ‘crash courses’ together to help them practice and build confidence before the real thing. This model was great, but I believed looking for truly outstanding students who could provide all of these ‘crash courses’ for a single study programme could be an even more impactful model — so we explored and tested some ideas. The outcome was fantastic. By inviting Pia to be our sole tutor for Arts & Culture during this last year, we saw that (1) students reported a higher quality of ‘crash course experiences’, greatly due to the confidence they felt in her as a proven, knowledgeable and authoritative source within their programmes, and (2) we saw Pia flourish as a tutor, being able to use these recurring opportunities as a space to not only become more comfortable in herself as a pedagogist, but also to thrive as one by testing new things, taking feedback, and leveraging her ‘newfound comforts’ to build ‘strategic discomforts’ that have ultimately catalyzed her growth. Her contribution was nothing short of exceptional, and we are incommensurably grateful for what we have been able to achieve together. Pia, I sincerely hope we get to work together sometime again in the future. You demonstrated remarkable resilience and dedication, and our shared growth stands as a testament of a bright and very promising academic career ahead of you.

In case a tutor gets sick or cannot go to their tutorial, I take over and teach their group instead. I mainly take over classes in the first and second year of the BA Arts and Culture. By working closely together with faculty members and gaining teaching experience, my work as a student tutor is an ideal preparation for further work in the field of academia.

As the academic tutor for the Arts and Culture crash courses organised by SOFASoS, I am responsible for helping students with their exam preparations. In order to help them with course readings and complex concepts, I summarise the course, answer their questions and give tips for the exam. In the past, students have often approached me after the exam and told me that I helped them extremely with their exam preparation. This experience both improved my teaching skills as well as my ability to give presentations and collaborate. Show less
