Created a complete educational module on the cosmic microwave background and adapted it for use both in the planetarium and as a virtual planetarium show to be viewed on any home computer. Took into account the age range of planetarium visitors as well as the wide variety of backgrounds in astronomy, and worked to create a module that would be interesting and challenging for everyone, regardless of these varying factors. I had the opportunity to do summer research at CERN through the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory REU program. For the first four weeks, I worked at Duke on the testing system for the new silicon modules for the ATLAS detector upgrade. At CERN, I worked to create a machine learning tool to distinguish quark jets from gluon jets based on the particle flow algorithm and the substructure of the jets. As a student, I worked under the supervision of Dr. Dan Reichart and other physics and astronomy professors at UNC Chapel Hill. We used a 40-foot radio telescope to collect data on the shape of the Milky Way, the Doppler shift of different portions of the galaxy, the brightness of the Moon, and the period of extremely faint pulsars. I also learned to use Skynet to take observations of the Andromeda galaxy using a 20-meter radio telescope, and I analyzed these observations to create a true-color and false-color image of Andromeda as well as an estimate of the galaxy’s speed towards us. Skynet also helped me take optical images of deep-sky objects using the PROMPT telescopes in Chile. Over the course of the program, I collaborated efficiently with students from all over the country to collect and analyze data, and eventually made four final presentations to the entire team.
