The mission of Stepping Stones is to improve the education and general welfare of disadvantaged children in China. Since its inception in 2006, the program for the most recently concluded academic year (fall 2011 to spring 2012) consisted of around 169 volunteers providing free oral English classes to 3,857 students weekly, in 8 migrant schools and 9 community centers throughout Shanghai. For the mentioned academic year, a total of 3,313 free English lessons were given and another 1,652 students benefitted from other educational projects, such as the provision of free eye screening and treatment.
