I produced application summaries to the charity identifying the issues and informing caseworkers what further information or documentation was required. I wrote short attention-grabbing notices for the Bar Pro Bono Unit website hoping to persuade barristers to take on cases. Other examples of my responsibilities included archiving old case files, liaising with barristers about case paperwork and writing case summaries after a barrister had completed their work with the client. • Legal Survey Researcher
      • May 2015 - Jun 2015

I carried out phone interviews with people in immigration detention centres about their access to legal advice and information. This included the information they were able to access in the library including on the Internet. The research was to be used by Bail for Immigration Detainees to campaign to improve the availability of legal advice and information in the detention centres. It was very important that I established a rapport with the individuals so that they trusted me to discuss their distressing personal situations. I had to be calm and composed as the conversations could often be very difficult due to an individual's frustration with their situation or limited English.

    • Advice and Information Volunteer
      • Oct 2014 - Mar 2015

I provide free legal advice and information to members of the public who write with a query. This is mostly related to issues concerning rights protected under the Human Rights Act 1998 but not exclusively. I have provided advice on issues from criminal bail conditions to disability discrimination in a hospital. Furthermore, I was a legal observer for the 18th October TUC March in London providing information on how the march was policed. • Asylum Law Caseworker
      • Jun 2014 - Sep 2014

As an asylum law caseworker, my main role was to carry out legal research to supplement and strengthen an asylum seeker's fresh claim. This involved analysing UK and international law. It also involved detailed research of Home Office Country of Origin Information (COI) Reports and human rights reports (for example Human Rights Watch) of countries such as Iran and Eritrea.I was also entrusted to personally carry out client conferences and to complete legal aid applications on behalf of people with no legal representation. Several of the cases I did work on were subsequently deemed strong enough to be taken on for free by a solicitor.

    • Society President
      • Sep 2012 - May 2013

I organised local campaigns on human rights issues including women's rights in Afghanistan and opposing the death penalty. I also ran public meetings on topics such as LGBT rights in Uganda and won a Sheffield University Student's Union debate that the United Kingdom should remain within the European Convention on Human Rights.I was also heavily involved in Amnesty's campaign for an international arms trade treaty at the United Nations. As part of this campaign, I lobbied the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg at his constituency office. The UK government eventually played an important role in getting the treaty agreed. Furthermore, as part of the society, I was involved in a successful challenge to an injunction obtained by the University of Sheffield restricting student protests on campus.

    • Games Maker

I was in the medal presentation party at various sporting venues during the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. I helped prepare the medal ceremonies and presented awards at the men's and women's football final on the pitch at Wembley Stadium and at the Excel Centre for the Paralympic sit-down volleyball. I was a doorstep interviewer carrying out short interviews with people in order to check the accuracy of the postal census within a postcode area. I was entrusted with large amounts of private information and had to return to each property on my list at least ten times before I was allowed to record that there was no response.
