Primary responsibilities over the course of eight years included anything to do with Unix, usually Solaris or Linux; anything to do with databases, usually SQL Server or Oracle; and system monitoring, internally with Nagios and externally using Microsoft System Center products. I also worked on virtualisation projects (server and desktop), application development, and a myriad of other customer support issues. In addition, I was responsible for making sure internal IT requirements were met.

Safedoor was an innovative web payments company that was closed down as a bizarre knockon effect of 9/11 - Securicor, the parent company, was involved in US airport security and was 'encouraged' by the markets to concentrate on more core businesses so they closed Safedoor. I looked after and extended the web server infrastructure for less time than I was initially anticipating. Hardware was mostly Sun, database was Oracle, content management was Coldfusion.

Based at the headquarters in Basingstoke, I was responsible for designing and writing software for the Lansing Linde (as was) local service companies and jointly responsible for looking after their server hardware (primarily IBM RISC kit running AIX). I was also involved in data integration projects with central mainframe systems, and latterly in migrating some of the local companies to a new SAP R3 system.
