      During the past decade, CCTV evidence has played an important role in identifying suspects involved in criminal and terrorist activities. In many of the video and photos captures vehicles are observed transporting the suspects or leaving the scene of the criminal offence. This has lead to the request of identification of these vehicles by investigators to assist in helping to identify possible suspects and enable warrants to be obtained for tracking and/or audio devices as well as surveillance by speciality units to gather enough evidence for charges.During the past 4 years Detective Phil Ens has been using his 20 years of auto theft experience and personal car collecting knowledge and experience to assist lead investigators in the identification of vehicles involved in burglaries, robberies, sexual assaults and homicides. Regina vs Jones and Stewart Supreme Court of British Columbia Judge Catherine WedgeApril 2016 : Detective Phil Ens identified the suspect vehicle used in this 1st degree murder incident from September 2009.       Vancouver Police Auto Crime Enforcement (ACE) unit investigates various forms of auto crime related offences. ACE is part of the largest "Bait Car" program in North America. These includes not just vehicles, but ATV's , boats. heavy machinery, trailers and all types of property. ACE are one of the few agencies using RFID and GPS technology for the tracking and recovery of property assets. Laptops, mountain bikes, TV's and almost any type of property. This technology has assisted in not only recovery of the stolen property but other property stolen by the suspect or purchased by the "fence". ACE also provides expert vehicle identification for agencies in the Greater Vancouver area as well as training on the new street methods of auto theft. ACE also provides investigation and expertise for marine theft. ACE installs and programs covert GPS units to assist investigators in complex auto theft, marine and property investigations.ACE trains and instructs at the Provincial Police Academy on auto theft investigations. Ace assist s the CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency) with vehicle identification on export and importation.
