Soft Matter and Functional Interfaces Centre for Doctoral Training (SOFI CDT) An Industry focused PhD program offering 6 months training to tackle problems faced by leading soft matter industries. Working in interdisciplinary teams, we offered solutions to current issues faced by Lucite, Unilever, Nestle, Epigem, P&G, Akzo Nobel and Shlumberger through a number of company led case studies. As Part of SOFI I have also attended courses outside my academic field. Summer 'mini MBA' schools ran by the Durham University business school has given me the vital skills needed to take a scientific idea/product to market. A radio/media training course at BBC Scotland has given me the opportunity to host a radio show and learn how to communicate science effectively. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ PhD Supervisor: Dr Sharon Cooper The market for graphene and related materials is vast as demonstrated by the significant ongoing research in this area. Nevertheless, the synthesis routes to these materials are limited to a few established methods. My PhD research focuses on a novel, low temperature and scalable bottom-up synthesis route using surfactant phases. We have also been able to achieve nanoquartz crystallisation under ambient conditions for the first time via a similar route employing microemulsions as the surfactant phases. I am currently investigating the scope for the crystallisation other nanomaterials using this methodology, to provide low temperature routes to the synthesis of nanocrystals often employed in heterogeneous catalysis. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I also teach Chemistry undergrads leading the problem classes for the Mathematical and Experimental Tools Required in Chemistry (METRiC) module at Durham University.
