I first met Peter when he was working as the Team Leader for IPD's Global Health Team. I knew very little about data analysis or global health, but Peter was unfailingly enthusiastic and encouraging of anyone who was interested in participating. I was convinced to join, and as I worked on the team throughout the year, Peter's talent at managing a large group comprised of graduate and undergraduate students with a wide-variety backgrounds, interests, and knowledge-bases became self-evident. Peter gave clear guidance and direction when needed, but was an excellent listener who valued everyone's input and ensured that all team members' unique talents were being utilized effectively. His talent in team management was clearly recognized by those outside our team, as he was promoted to Program Manager the following year. In both capacities, Peter made managing several projects simultaneously appear effortless and always ensured that all voices were heard and respected. I now work in global health and credit the role that Peter played in encouraging an inexperienced, but interested, first year graduate student in setting me on the path that ultimately led to my career.

Peter was my program manager during my practicum (internship) in 2011 at The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas. I watched an online presentation by Peter about the financial implications of low health literacy; I was moved by his passion and the data he presented, so I contacted him and two months later I moved to Austin. Peter made a scary situation for a young graduate student very comfortable. This was my first professional experience in a small, community-based organization, and Peter thankfully took me under his wing. His passion for Health Literacy was exciting and refreshing. Since I was studying healthcare management, I had significant interest in Peter’s role as program manager. In addition to my day-to-day duties as outlined in my contract, Peter allowed me to enhance my management skill-sets in a variety of ways. He took the time to meet with me, at least weekly, to discuss not only what I’d done for the organization, but also what the organization could do for me. Next, Peter allowed me to act on behalf of The Coalition and liaise with numerous healthcare and health policy constituents throughout Travis County. Moreover, Peter let me ask questions. Constantly. I felt comfortable telling him what I had limited familiarity with, and he provided guidance throughout the summer with no hesitation. Thanks to Peter, my interpersonal skills have increased tremendously. After graduation from UT, I used my experiences with Peter at The Coalition to secure federal employment and obtain a leadership role with the UT School of Public Health Alumni Association.
