*Navajo Code Talkers Association is not the Navajo Code Talkers Museum, Inc. Over 400 young Navajo men created the only unbreakable code in modern military history. This secret code was used in every major landing in the Pacific--Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Tarawa, Bougainville, Kwajalein, Eniwetok, Makin, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. Some of us ended up in North China, where all Japanese soldiers in North China surrendered to us at Tsingtao, China, on October 25, 1945. Navajo Code contributed significantly to winning the war in the pacific. Save thousands of lives. We are presently working on a National Navajo Code Talkers Museum and Veteran Center to be built on the Navajo reservation; to preserve Navajo, the Marine Corps, Native Americans, and America's unique legacy of WWII. Our Children and America's children will go through that Museum and learn what it takes to preserve our freedom and liberty. Out of 400 of us, that served as Navajo Code Talkers, only 5 of us are still living. We are continuing our efforts to raise the necessary funds for the Museum and Veteran Center project. Show less

Window Rock, Arizona; The Navajo Nation Capitol
-
Chairman
-
Jan 1971 - Jan 1991
Chief Executive Officer and Chairing of the Navajo Nation Council. The Navajo Nation Council is the governing body for the Navajo Nation, working together with the Navajo Nation Chairman since the inception of the modern Navajo Nation government in 1923; In 1990, the Navajo Nation government was restructured to abolish the Chairmanship of the Navajo Nation Council. The new title was created "President, Navajo Nation" and reduced his function to just overseeing the Executive Branch of the Navajo Nation. The Council appointed themselves a "Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council" to Chair the Navajo Council. Served as Chairman of the Navajo Nation Council from 1971-1990. Re-elected four times, unprecedented in modern Navajo history. Unshackled BIA chain tied around Navajo Nation government and moved the tribe into self-government and self-determination. Established CERT, Council of Energy Resource Tribes, to restructure how we, Native Americans, will protect and lease our natural resources. Established Navajo Nation taxation law against heavy opposition and legal challenge from major energy companies. U.S. Supreme Court ruled in our favor, and consequently, we were able to recoup some losses due to poor royalty agreements executed by the BIA. Helped established American Indian National Bank in DC, as well as, National Tribal Chairman Assn. Created Navajo Engineering Construction Authority to contract all major engineering projects on Navajo reservation and off-reservation, competing with Bechtel and GE, thus creating jobs for our people on and off the reservation. Established Navajo Manpower Center, which later became Navajo Technical University. Got Congress to fund, regularly, Navajo Community College (now Dine College). Show less

Project Engineer

May 1957 - May 1964
After graduating from University if Oklahoma, my first job, as an Engineer, was with Howard Hughes' Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo, California. My initial job with Hughes was to monitor (testing) electronic power supply being manufactured for F106 gun control. After a year, I was promoted to Project Engineer for Polaris Missile guidance system program. Specifically, the manufacture, testing, and delivery of a gimbal system that guides the missile to its designated target. Navy specs for the missile was such that almost every part used were state-of-the-art and one of a kind. Testing these units required use of light and optics for accuracy. I left Hughes after 6-1/2 years (1963) to come back to the Navajo Nation to help new administration reorganize tribal government. Show less
