My primary objective was to develop the Fund’s investment strategy and to oversee the investment processes for the implementation of that strategy. This required providing strong leadership to an analyst team. Investment strategy updates and proposals were presented to the NPRF trustees (NPRF Commission) at regular meetings. My remit also included: To chair the NPRF Investment Committee which is the primary forum for the consideration of all investment matters related to the NPRF by the senior executive team. To oversee the preparation by analysts of high quality insightful chart books for the Committee describing market and economic conditions and identifying investment opportunities. To propose tactical asset allocation positions against the Fund’s strategic benchmark based on market conditions and valuations, providing high quality supporting research and implementing those positions as agreed. To manage the Fund’s fixed income, absolute return and commodity portfolios, including chairing semi-annual review meetings with senior management and fund managers from the appointed investment managers. The observations and conclusions from these meetings are presented to the NPRF Commission along with any recommendations regarding manager termination decisions. On-site due-diligence site visits are also conducted with investment managers with the objective of evaluating their investment processes and systems at first hand. To manage all derivative activity undertaken by the Fund. This has included substantial equity options positions to manage the NPRF’s risk exposures during the transition phase to the ISIF.
