As part of MAHLE’s engineering and maintenance department, I was tasked to develop and improve the performance of their Weybridge slitter, a machine used on their main production line. This involved: • Engaging with MAHLE engineers, machine operators, and other project stakeholders to identify and understand the key faults affecting the machine’s performance, and develop a list of design specifications that defined the scope of the project and highlight technical/quality requirements all proposed designs had to adhere to • Generating a variety of concept solutions that satisfied project requirements through sketch and 3D modelling. • Refining concepts through validation calculations, material research, and design evaluation tools (FMEA, DFMA principles, etc) to ensure all proposed solutions are fit for purpose and are in line with the company standards and methods of manufacture. • Liaising with suppliers to ensure project deadlines were delivered on budget and schedule. • Iterative stages of simulation (FEA), prototyping and testing in-situ to validate the proposed improvements and identify the optimal solution(s) before working towards final implementation. • Overseeing the manufacture and assembly of the final working prototype solutions. Upon completion of my placement, I developed 2 working prototype solutions that have been successfully integrated into MAHLE’s main production line. These designs: • improve their employees’ ability to carry out maintenance work • eliminate design flaws subsequently improving the production lines overall efficiency and reliability Show less
