Simulus Engineers offers multidisciplinary engineering capability with a strong focus on the early stages of project development, including scoping, prefeasibility and bankable feasibility studies. As the primary draftsman/3D designer, one of the first things I was asked to do was to review the drafting package in use & advise on any alternatives. This has been a steep learning curve as I deemed the best software package to use for the sort of work we do to be Autodesk Plant 3D - a package I was not familiar with using, let alone setting up. Gee I enjoy a challenge!! But things have gone well & I have been able to make a good start on creating the Detail Design project models & outputs for a copper/gold project in Indonesia within a few weeks of starting my new position. • Contract multi-disciplined design draftsman and steel detailer
      • Jun 2009 - Present

I am a multi-disciplined design draftsperson whose career was founded on projects within the chemical plant environment, such as steel structures, tanks, vessels, piping, concrete and mechanical components. However, the last few years has seen my work and skill base naturally specialise more toward the design and detailing of steel structures, balustrades and handrails within the commercial and residential sectors. I have also produced drawings of several small residential and commercial projects for council approval such as shop fit-outs, granny flats, house extensions and garage/shed additions. My work includes non-drafting tasks such as liaising with clients to understand job requirements, provision of quotations, site visits to discuss and measure, supervision of fabricators and installers, and anything else a client may require. I rapidly adapt to any situation I am faced with and use a variety of different Autodesk programmes in order to complete my jobs, specifically Advance Steel, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, Navisworks and Vault. My career aim is to continue to expand my considerable skill base, continue to provide an efficient service to my current clients and develop working relationships with new clients over the years to come. This includes my willingness to work from another companies office if required, as I have done for EPMS engineers and Barclay Engineers (see below). Show less

McDowell Affleck is a small consulting engineering company in Perth. They have a number of regular clients such as Rio Tinto, CBH & WesTrac. Their style of management is quite different to anything else I have experienced, & it is quite refreshing. The atmosphere in the office is one of fun, friendliness & laughter but at the same time everyone takes their work seriously & acts professionally. My role is primarily a senior mechanical draftsman using Inventor, but I have also been involved in structural projects using Advance Steel. Part of my role has been to set up Advance Steel so that the drawing outputs match the same standard as other CAD generated drawings leaving the office. There will be plenty of interesting days ahead, of that I am sure. Show less

This full time permanent role is primarily working on brown fields projects for Rio Tinto using Microstation AECOsim Building Designer V81 which has placed another feather in my software cap! I also spent about 6 months using Tekla to produce GA drawings of new or replacement guarding on a number of Rio Tinto sites. This was done in conjunction with 3D scan data laid over the top of the 3D Tekla model which enabled us to check for possible clashes & installation complications. In this position, I am working closely with a team of engineers and project managers to complete a variety of projects for several CPC clients, particularly Tronox, a Titanium Dioxide production plant in Kwinana, Western Australia. All the drafting (including mechanical) is done using Advance Steel. CPC is a well respected mid-tier engineering firm that has a proven record designing and drafting entire mine plants from the ground up. There is a lot I can learn from a company like this, so it a pleasure to be part of the 100+ person team. Show less

This position is primarily working as a JMD site representative for the Newmont Boddington Gold mine in Western Australia. I normally visit the mine site for 2 days a week to meet with engineers & project managers where we discuss current & any possible new projects. Then I work on these projects from my Perth office in close connection with the Bunbury office via email & remote server access. The projects I work on are very varied & could span almost all facets of the mine plant & operation. This is a casual contract position that I am operating in conjunction with my usual business 'Pete's Drafting Service' (see below) Show less

This contract position was 'in-house' at the Barclay Engineering premises and my role was to help the other drafters complete some important projects. Initially I completed all the fabrication drawings (using Inventor) of an acoustic enclosure around a large rotating ball mill. The enclosure was made up of removable panels that were fixed to a removable steel frame. My next project was the detailing of a 12m long x 3.2m wide transportable acoustic enclosure for a diesel genset. The package included all the associated equipment necessary for the operation of the genset such as attenuators, filters, fuel tank, transitions, roof mounted cooling radiators, pipework and exhaust ducting. A large part of the project was made from folded and laser cut sheet metal - also all drawn using Inventor. Show less

    • Fabrication Draftsman
      • May 2016 - Oct 2016

This is a contract position with a newly founded branch of the successful motor bodies building company Osborne Motor Bodies. The position involves the drafting of small fabrication projects such as handrailing, balustrading and structural steel for a variety of clients such as Perkins Builders, Pact construction, John Holland and Swan personnel. In addition to drafting, I am required to provide complete materials lists to the company stores man for purchase, or I order items needed for the fabrication and installation of the structure myself directly from the client. This includes organising the delivery of steel to the galvanisers when required, or having steel plates laser cut or bent. I also closely liaise with the workshop fabricators to ensure they are fabricating the items correctly, and supervise the site installation. Show less

    • Contract Mechanical Design Draftsman
      • Dec 2014 - Jul 2015

EPMS Engineers contracted me through my business to work out of their Perth office on a chemical plant expansion project in Brisbane, Australia. I worked in conjunction with the office structural engineer to produce literally hundreds of concrete and steel drawings. The concrete drawings I produced were for fabrication, while the steel drawings were G.A only. The steel detailing was done by another company, but they worked off the information shown my drawings. I also helped produce piping isometric drawings, which required the reading and understanding of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (PID;s) Show less

During my time with Proteus Engineers, I worked on 2 mining (iron ore) related projects. Firstly the design of a new diesel fuel farm, and secondly modifications to an existing iron ore conveying facility. This was my first exposure to the mining industry and I found it quite interesting. It was also my first exposure to drafting in 3D via Bentley Microstation. • Mechanical Design Draftsman

Cristal Pigment is a chemical (Titanium Dioxide) manufacturing facility. My duties as a mechanical draftsman within the companies drawing office was to produce any type of drawing required (other than electrical or instrumentation) by the site engineers or project managers. This included the production of fabrication (shop) drawings as required for installation of new structures, piping runs, concrete and mechanical equipment. It also included the modification of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (PID's) Even though I was termed a mechanical draftsman, my work was extremely varied and included all disciplines other than electrical. I was required to work within the companies engineering and safety policies and specifications, and this included frequently working with in the plant measuring and sketching existing equipment. I worked closely with the other drafts people within the office as well as other employees such as engineers, managers and safety officers, and was most definitely an important part of the organisation. I worked for Cristal Pigment from 2005 to 2008, then again from 2009 to 2013. All of the drawings I produced between 2005 and 2008 were via 2D AutoCAD. The drawings I produced between 2009 and 2013 were mainly via Inventor software. A few of the drawings I produced are shown below. Show less
